Wind Virtual World
* World first no longer hot air

Atkins arrives at Cityscape 2005 proudly
exhibiting a world first – the integration
of wind turbines with a commercial tower
construction.
The construction in question is that of
the Bahrain World Trade Centre, and it
was only publicly announced this week
that work to build the twin-tower
building incorporating wind turbines was
well underway.
Mr Shaun Killa, associate director and
head of architecture, told Cityscape Daily
News: “Although work has been underway
for some time now, we have had to keep
the possibility of using the turbines out of
the public domain as feasibility studies
were carried out. But now we expect the
turbines and bridges that will link these
two towers will be brought onto site
around March or April next year.”
The two 42-storey sail shaped office
towers, situated on the main King Faisal
Highway in Manama, Bahrain, taper to a
height of 240m and will support three
30m diametre horizontal-axis wind
turbines. The unique design of the towers
allows the natural sea breezes to be
funnelled between the towers creating a
powerful wind velocity.
It is expected the annual sustainable
energy yield from the turbines will
generate enough power for the entire
building and common areas of the towers.
Killa added: “It is quite a refreshing
thought that it is in this part of the world,
one of the great oil producing areas, that
the first towers to be powered by
renewable energy are being built. We
have been involved in all aspects of the
project from conceptual design to project
management and we are all very proud of
the work we have done.”
Atkins is one of the world’s leading
providers of professional technology-based
consultancy and support services,
and will be showing a whole range of its
work at Cityscape on stand 5800.
“Being at Cityscape is important for us.
We were at the very first Cityscape and we
believe it is important to show existing
clients and potential new clients exactly
what we do,” Killa said.
