The Ikuchi Bridge utilizes a unique composite design. The center span uses a light-weight and strong steel girder, while the shorter side spans are heavier prestressed concrete sections which act as counterweights. While it is not the only bridge to utilize such a composite design, with its center span of 490m it is the world's longest combined steel and concrete deck cable stayed bridge.

The original design of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge was for a total length of 3990m with a center span of 1990m, but disaster struck January 17, 1995 at 5:46 in the form of the Great Hanshin Earthquake.
