The center span uses a light-weight and strong steel girder, while the shorter side spans are heavier prestressed concrete sections which act as counterweights. While it is not the only bridge to utilize such a composite design, with its center span of 490m it is the world's longest combined steel and concrete deck cable stayed bridge. |
![]() Type 3 span continuous suspension bridge Height 3,911m Steel 96,200t Completed April, 1998 Owner Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Authority The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is currently the world's longest suspension bridge and boasts the world's largest center span at 1991m. The original design of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge was for a total length of 3990m with a center span of 1990m, but disaster struck January 17, 1995 at 5:46 in the form of the Great Hanshin Earthquake. Not only did the earthquake deliver a terrible blow to the city of Kobe, but it moved the main towers of the Akashi bridge approximately 80cm apart as well as shifting them horizontaly and causing one to sink and the other to rise a small amount. |
